Throne of Glass #2
This book started out with much the same feel as Throne of Glass (which I enjoyed but didn’t love), but about half way through it took an unexpected and epic turn. The things that I disliked about the first book seem to be made up for in the second. Celeana is so much more assassin-y. Magic has this rich history and supernatural powers are real and tangible. I finally start the to get a feel for Celeana the person, and how the layers of her personality relate to her experiences.

Three things kept this from being a five star: One, I wanted the whole book (and the first book) to have the epic feel of the second half. Two, a writing style that I find to be not quite sophisticated enough for my tastes (though the more engrossed I become with the story, the less this seems to bother me). And three, the fact that Chaol’s character seems to fall flat just as Celeana starts to shine. Overall the story’s really picking up and I’m excited too see where it goes next.
